most widely used method to recover gold from cyanide solutions. 91ÆÞÓÑ is experienced in the use of carbon adsorption, carbon-in-leach (CIL), and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) in gold circuits. Carbon recovery processes can be evaluated in batch and continuous operations. 91ÆÞÓÑ’s continuous CIL circuit has been used to design commercial operations.</p> <p>Activated carbon adsorption has also been used to remove mercury and other metals from solutions and to clean organic impurities from aqueous feed and wastewater streams. Other adsorbants, such as clays, aluminas, and zeolites, have been used for impurity removal.</p> <p>Ion exchange is widely used in chemical and mining processes for separating one metal from another and for impurity removal. Examples of ion exchange processes developed at 91ÆÞÓÑ include the recovery of gold and silver from cyanide solutions and alternate lixiviants, and uranium recovery from both acid and carbonate circuits.</p> <p>Ion exchange resins are widely used for removing impurities from aqueous process streams, waste water, and mine waters. chosen for its selectivity towards the element or elements of interest. This technology was first used by mining companies for purification of uranium and vanadium during the uranium boom after World War II, and then for copper in the early 1960s. 91ÆÞÓÑ played a major role in the development of and pilot plant work in the first commercial copper SX–electrowinning plant located at the Bluebird Mine in Arizona.</p> <p>For more than 50 years, 91ÆÞÓÑ has played a significant role in the development of this technology and its transfer from laboratory experiments to commercial operation and continues to assist clients as the technology has spread to other metal recovery systems. steps. 91ÆÞÓÑ has extensive expertise in developing and piloting precipitation processes.</p> <p>For instance, hydroxide is used to precipitate iron from acid streams, neutralize acid streams for disposal, recover nickel and cobalt hydroxide from sulfate liquors, and remove metals from wastewater. Platinum group metals are also recovered from acidic leach solutions by precipitation.</p> <p>Sulfide is another common compound used in precipitation steps. Hydrogen sulfide is used to recover copper from copper-bearing streams and nickel and cobalt from acid sulfate liquors. Sodium hydrosulfide and calcium sulfide are widely used to remove zinc, copper, lead, silver, and cadmium from waste streams.</p> <p>Cementation is a specialized precipitation process in which a more reactive metal is used to remove a more noble metal from solution. Copper cementation has been used extensively to recover copper. as dilute sulfuric acid, dilute aqueous cyanide, or other reagents. Methods for contacting ore and solution include agitating ground solids and solution (slurry) in open tanks, agitating slurry at a high temperature in a pressure vessel, or percolating solution through crushed ore that has been piled in a heap or vat and collecting the solution that issues from the bottom.</p> <p>High-temperature and pressure leach processes are performed in autoclaves. 91ÆÞÓÑ's batch laboratory autoclaves and continuous pilot autoclaves have been operated under oxidizing, acidic, or alkaline conditions (see <a href="/capabilities/hydrometallurgy/high-pressure-leaching">High Pressure Leaching</a>). In other processes, oxidizing or reducing gases, such as air, oxygen, or sulfur dioxide, are used, taking into account the gas-liquid contact requirements.</p> <p>Some leaching systems are complex and are difficult to simulate in single-stage laboratory experiments. Such cases require special equipment and procedures to produce accurate data to predict how the system will perform in a large-scale commercial operation. For example, in the recovery of gold by cyanidation using the carbon-in-leach (CIL) process, the ground ore is suspended in a cyanide solution and is fed to a series of tanks. The slurry cascades from one agitated tank to the next, contacting activated carbon in each tank where the gold is adsorbed. Each overflow stream passes through a screened funnel into the subsequent vessel to collect the carbon from the stream. The collected carbon is manually transferred back to the preceding vessel (or other parts of the system) to realistically simulate the countercurrent flow of ore and carbon until the desired gold content is attained.</p> <p>Leaching processes are also used to chemically remove contaminants from soils or other solids.
